For years, I thought caring meant being available at all costs.

I believed love meant anticipating other people's needs, fixing their problems, and making sure everyone around me was okay. If someone I loved was struggling, I felt responsible. If they were hurting, I hurt. If they were unhappy, I immediately searched for a way to make it better.

What I didn't realize was that some of what I called "caring" wasn't actually caring at all.

It was codependency.

And underneath that codependency wasn't weakness, neediness, or a lack of independence.

The difference isn't the amount of love.

It's the amount of responsibility we assume for another person's life.
