“When You’re Too Tired to Pretend: A Moment with Mary Oliver”

I just flew back into town and my whole body feels like it’s still somewhere between airports — that bone‑deep exhaustion that hits after you’ve been holding yourself together for days. So tonight, instead of forcing myself to be profound or polished, I’m sharing one of my favorite poems: The Journey by Mary Oliver.

Mary Oliver wrote the way some people breathe — quietly, consistently, with a kind of reverence for the world that most of us forget to practice. Her life was shaped by solitude, by long walks in the woods, by choosing her own path even when it meant stepping away from the noise and expectations of others. That’s why The Journey carries so much power. It came from a woman who knew what it meant to save her own life, inch by inch, choice by choice.

The poem speaks to that moment when you finally hear your own voice beneath everyone else’s. When you realize you can’t keep mending other people’s lives at the cost of your own. When you step into the storm anyway — tired, unsure, but determined. And somewhere along the way, the world begins to meet you with a kind of quiet guidance. A new voice rises. Your voice.

So if you’re exhausted, overwhelmed, or standing at the edge of a decision that feels bigger than you, this poem is for you too.

The Journey By Mary Oliver

One day you finally knew what you had to do, and began, though the voices around you kept shouting their bad advice—

though the whole house began to tremble and you felt the old tug at your ankles.

"Mend my life!" each voice cried.

But you didn't stop. You knew what you had to do,

though the wind pried with its stiff fingers at the very foundations, though their melancholy was terrible.

It was already late enough, and a wild night, and the road full of fallen branches and stones.

But little by little, as you left their voices behind, the stars began to burn through the sheets of clouds,

and there was a new voice which you slowly recognized as your own, that kept you company as you strode deeper and deeper into the world,

determined to do the only thing you could do—

determined to save the only life you could save.
