We’ve Forgotten How to Be Kind

Someone thanked me the other day for being kind. It was a really nice compliment… but it also made me sad that we are surprised when someone is genuinely kind.

Sad that kindness has become something rare. Sad that softness feels unusual. Sad that we’ve confused harshness with strength, and unfiltered words with honesty.

Somewhere along the way, we forgot how to be human with each other.

We talk to strangers like they’re disposable. We speak to people online like they don’t have a beating heart. We treat disappointment like permission to dehumanize. We forget that every person we meet is carrying something we can’t see.

And here’s the part that’s harder to swallow:

Even the people who have disappointed us… even the ones who hurt us… are still human. That doesn’t mean they deserve access to you. It doesn’t mean they get a seat at your table. It doesn’t mean you ignore the harm or pretend it didn’t happen.

But it does mean we stop acting like pain gives us the right to stop being kind.

The Tragedy I See in My Work

When I work with people, this is the heartbreak I see:

So many are in pain because their kindness has been:

manipulated
treated with suspicion
taken advantage of
or used for someone else’s comfort

And that is a tragedy — to have to heal from a trait the world desperately needs more of.

I always tell the people I work with:

Don’t change your heart. Don’t change your empathy. Don’t change the core of who you are.

The world needs people like you. We just need you to be more discerning about who you let sit at your table.

Be kind… but discerning.

And that’s the work for kind people — not becoming harder, but becoming wiser.

Kindness + Boundaries = Strength

Because here’s the truth:

Kindness without boundaries becomes self‑abandonment. But kindness with boundaries becomes strength.

People misunderstand boundaries. They think boundaries are walls. They think boundaries are punishment. They think boundaries are distance or rejection.

But real boundaries are the opposite.

Boundaries are what keep you in relationship with someone — not what push them out.

Boundaries are:

teaching people how you want to be treated
naming what behavior hurts you
communicating what you can and cannot hold
protecting your energy so you can stay connected without losing yourself

The right people honor that. The wrong people get offended by it. And that tells you everything you need to know.

“Be kind” does not mean “let people run all over you.” It means you stay rooted in your humanity while also protecting your heart.

Gary Zukav — spiritual teacher, author of The Seat of the Soul, and one of the most influential voices on emotional awareness — teaches that kindness is a form of authentic power.

offering compassion, but not access
loving people, but not carrying their irresponsibility
seeing humanity in others, without sacrificing your own

Kindness becomes stronger when it’s paired with wisdom. It becomes safer when it’s paired with boundaries. It becomes sustainable when it’s paired with self‑respect.

And maybe the world wouldn’t feel so heavy if we stopped being shocked by kindness and started practicing it again — with strength, with clarity, and with discernment.
