Who am I?

It sounds like such a simple question.

Until you actually try to answer it.

I sit with people every week who are trying to figure this out.

Not because they don't know their name.

Not because they don't know what they do for a living.

They know the facts.

But underneath all of that is a much harder question:

Who am I underneath everything I learned I had to be?

Who am I if I'm not taking care of everybody?

Who am I if nobody needs me?

Who am I if I stop trying to keep the peace?

Who am I if I disappoint someone?

Who am I if my marriage ends?

Who am I if my children grow up?

Who am I if I leave the career that has defined me?

Who am I if I stop drinking?

Who am I if I stop performing?

Who am I if I finally admit that the life I worked so hard to build doesn't fit me anymore?

And sometimes...

Who am I if I'm not surviving something?

That's a big one.

Because sometimes what looks like a personality is actually an adaptation.

I'm the strong one.

Maybe you had to be.

I don't need anybody.

Maybe needing people never felt safe.

I'm easygoing.

Or maybe you learned that having needs created conflict.

I'm the caretaker.

Maybe being useful became the safest way to feel loved.

I don't get angry.

Maybe anger wasn't allowed in your family.

I'm an overachiever.

Maybe somewhere along the way, accomplishment became evidence that you were worthy.

And none of that means those parts of you aren't real.

It just means healing eventually invites you to get curious:

Is this who I am?

Or is this who I needed to become?

Therapy Can Get Really Weird Right About Here

Because we talk a lot about letting go.

Let go of toxic relationships.

Let go of people pleasing.

Let go of old beliefs.

Let go of shame.

Let go of survival mode.

Beautiful.

Except nobody talks enough about what happens after you let go.

There's space.

And space can feel uncomfortable as hell.

Because now you're standing there without the identity you've been wearing for years.

You're not rescuing everybody anymore.

You're not chasing someone who won't choose you.

You're not explaining yourself into exhaustion.

You're not automatically saying yes.

You're not accepting crumbs and calling it love.

And suddenly you have to ask:

Okay...then who the hell am I?

Maybe that's not a crisis.

Maybe that's an invitation.

Maybe Healing Isn't Becoming Someone New

Maybe healing is meeting yourself.

Slowly.

Curiously.

Without immediately deciding who you're supposed to be.

What do I actually like?

What do I believe?

What matters to me?

What does my body say yes to?

What does it say no to?

What relationships feel safe?

What brings me peace instead of just familiarity?

What would I choose if I weren't afraid of disappointing somebody?

What do I want when nobody else gets a vote?

Those questions can be terrifying.

They can also change your life.

Because eventually "Who am I?" stops being a question you're asking other people to answer for you.

You stop looking around the room for clues.

Am I good enough?

Am I lovable?

Am I too much?

Did I upset you?

Are you proud of me?

Do you approve?

Can I belong here?

And slowly, hopefully, something begins to shift.

You become a person you know.

Not a role.

Not a diagnosis.

Not a relationship status.

Not your trauma.

Not your productivity.

Not everybody's opinion of you.

You.

Complicated.

Still growing.

Still figuring some shit out.

But yours.

And maybe that's one of the most beautiful parts of healing.

Not creating a brand-new person.

But finally becoming curious about the person who was underneath all that survival in the first place.

So...

Who are you?

Not what do you do.

Not who are you married to.

Not who needs you.

Not what happened to you.

Not what everybody expects from you.

Who are YOU?

And if you don't completely know yet?

Good.

Maybe you're finally asking the right question.

Come Have These Conversations With Me

If questions like this are where you are in your own healing, these are exactly the kinds of conversations I have on No Bullshit Healing on YouTube and the No Bullshit Truth — Grown AF Edition podcast.

We talk about relationships, betrayal, boundaries, trauma, self-respect, emotional maturity, and the messy work of figuring out who the hell you are once you stop living according to everybody else's expectations.

No perfect healing.

No pretending you've got it all figured out.

Just real conversations about finding your way back to yourself.
