I showed up, over and over, with love that felt unconditional. And for a while, I believed that meant I was deeply loved in return.

But slowly, something shifted. The giving became expected. The support became routine. And the appreciation began to fade. He stopped asking how I was doing, how I felt, what I needed. It wasn’t about us anymore—it was about what I could do for him. I started to feel drained, invisible, like a resource instead of a partner. And yet, I kept trying. I kept giving. I kept chasing the feeling of being chosen, hoping that if I just gave enough, he’d finally see me—not just what I offered.

The truth is, this wasn’t just about him. It was a pattern. I had been an over-giver in many relationships—romantic, platonic, even professional. I thought that if I gave enough, I’d be safe. I’d be loved. I’d be chosen. But what I learned—painfully and slowly—is that over-giving doesn’t guarantee love. It often attracts people who take without ever truly seeing you.

Why Overgiving Happens—and Why It Hurts

Psychologists say overgiving often stems from early emotional conditioning. If love in childhood was tied to usefulness or achievement, we may grow up believing we must earn affection through effort. Overgivers tend to equate generosity with worthiness, thinking, “If I give enough, I’ll be loved.”

A 2014 study of married couples found that perceived imbalance in effort—when one partner feels they’re giving more than receiving—correlates with lower relationship satisfaction and higher emotional fatigue. Another 2022 study revealed that habitual sacrifice without reciprocity leads to resentment and burnout, especially in romantic relationships.

Overgiving feels noble, but when it’s not met with care or acknowledgment, it becomes self-erasure.

How to Tell If You’re Being Used or Truly Seen

Here are signs to help you distinguish between being used and being seen:

You feel more resentful than fulfilled.
Your needs are rarely acknowledged or prioritized.
You’re always the emotional caretaker, never the cared-for.
You feel invisible when you’re not giving.
You’re afraid to stop giving, fearing love will disappear.

Ask yourself:

Am I trying to be chosen, or am I seeking love?
What parts of me do I hide to be picked?
Who loves me even when I’m not performing?
