Disney may have shaped our childhoods with castles and crowns, but its lessons still echo in adult love. Beneath the sparkle, those stories remind us that betrayal, heartbreak, and healing are part of every journey.

This Thanksgiving, my daughter flew home. She’s only staying until the day after Thanksgiving — life is busy when you’re finishing your last semester of a Master’s degree, teaching research, running your own project, and applying to doctoral programs. I’m proud of all she’s accomplishing (can you tell?), but here’s the part that makes me beam the most: underneath all the success, she’s simply a good human.

When she comes home, I get nostalgic. I remember the little girl who was obsessed with Disney princesses, twirling in dress‑up gowns, asking endless “whys.” Funny thing — that curiosity turned into her career. She’s building a life around research, questions, and discovery. And those princess stories she loved? They weren’t just about crowns and castles. They were about betrayal, heartbreak, and the courage to heal.

Love Gone Wrong in Fairy Tales

Disney reminds us that betrayal is part of the story:

  • Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) — Snow White was betrayed by someone she trusted.

  • The Little Mermaid (1989) — Ariel risked everything for love, only to be deceived.

  • Tangled (2010) — Rapunzel was kept captive under the guise of care.

  • The Little Mermaid (1989) — Prince Eric nearly betrayed Ariel by falling for Ursula’s illusion.

  • Frozen (2013) — Hans charmed Anna, only to manipulate her — while Kristoff showed what steady, genuine love looks like.

  • Beauty and the Beast (1991) — The Beast betrayed Belle’s trust with anger, but grew into redemption.

  • Cinderella (1950) — Prince Charming swooped in to “save” Cinderella, reminding us there’s no perfect partner — just imperfect humans learning to love better.

 Beyond the Fairy Tale

The beauty of Disney isn’t just the betrayal — it’s the recovery.

  • Snow White found community.

  • Ariel reclaimed her voice.

  • Rapunzel stepped into freedom.

  • Anna discovered real love after heartbreak.

  • The Beast transformed through growth.

These arcs remind us that healing is possible, but they also skip the messy middle.

Stepping Into Recovery After Betrayal

Real life isn’t as easy as a Disney movie. Healing takes time, intention, and courage. Here are ways to step into recovery:

  • Acknowledge the hurt — Betrayal cuts deep, and naming the pain is the first step.

  • Reclaim your identity — Just as Ariel reclaimed her voice, you can reclaim the parts of yourself that feel lost.

  • Seek connection — Snow White found strength in community; healing often happens in safe, supportive relationships.

  • Allow growth — Like the Beast, transformation comes when we face our flaws and choose change.

  • Believe in new chapters — Anna’s story reminds us that betrayal doesn’t mean love is impossible; it means we learn to choose better.

 My Daughter’s Reminder

Watching my daughter grow from that curious, princess‑obsessed child into a strong, successful woman reminds me that healing is possible. The same curiosity that made her ask “why” became her superpower in research and life. And the same resilience that Disney characters embody is what we all carry inside us.

The Takeaway

Betrayal may steal chapters of our story, but it doesn’t get to write the ending. Princes and princesses alike show us that:

  • Illusions can be tempting, but truth lasts.

  • Betrayal teaches us what real love looks like.

  • Growth and redemption are possible after mistakes.

  • There’s no perfect partner — only people willing to grow together.

And sometimes, the nostalgia of a child in a princess gown reminds us: healing isn’t about forgetting the betrayal — it’s about remembering the magic we still carry.
